about

“The outrage of disabled individuals across this country is going to continue, it is going to be ignited…” Is a sample from a speech made at the sit ins by disabled activist Judy Heumann, which sets the potent tone of this track from the start. The instrumentals are fierce, Luke’s guitar drives the song with a wicked riff, bass is straight up mean mugging, and Julio’s drums are so heavy they obliterates their surroundings. Dan’s ferocious vocals are politically charged and unapologetic. The lyrics are thought-provoking, educational, and hard as fuck. Dan came up with the premise for the song after watching the documentary, Crip Camp. Which is about the disability rights movement during the 70’s in the US, more specifically the 504 Sit ins where disabled people took over a federal building for their rights to be written into law. This was the band’s first time learning about this topic, and from that wanted to create this song to further spread awareness of this huge moment in disability rights history. Even though this event was a huge move forward for disability rights, 44 years later, there’s still so much work to be done.

lyrics

Judy Heumann Speech:
We will no longer allow the government to oppress disabled individuals, the outrage of disabled individuals across this country is going to continue, it is going to be ignited, there will be more take over of buildings, it is going to be ignited.

The Reckoning
Is coming
Now’s the time for liberation

The system
It’s not broken
It’s purposely built for oppression

The 504
Sit ins
Were only the beginning

The 504 enabled
Civil rights for the disabled

150 people stayed
In a federal building for 28 days

We held our ground
We’re not dead yet
We’re not going anywhere

Like heumann did
Like billups did
Like freeman did
Like klein did

Don’t want no charity or pity
Break barriers
We want to live free

Nothing about us without us
Nothing about us without us
Nothing about us without us
Nothing about us without us

The 504
Sit ins
Fighting for our lives we will win

The 504 enabled
Civil rights for the disabled

They don’t create change,
We do
Who keeps us safe?
We do
They create chains,
We break’em
Let’s end discrimination

We held our ground
We hold it down

504 still fighting for
504 still fighting for

I am, I am, I am human

We are, we are, we are human
